Pietro da Cortona (Cortona 1596-Rome 1669)
A tapestry Portiere with the arms of Don Taddeo Barberini, Principe di Palestrina c. 1630-32
-
A finished study for a tapestry portiere featuring the arms of Don Taddeo Barberini, flanked by winged victories bearing palm leaves. An identical drawing, apparently also by Cortona, is at Chatsworth. The tapestry, formerly in the Prince Enrico Barberini collection, was woven in 1632. A drawing by Bartolozzi (Albertina inv.1393) combines victories from this drawing with putti from a drawing of an allegorical subject by Ciro Ferri (RCIN 904500).
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c. 1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 113: 'The Ornamental Arms of the family of Barbarini')
