Follower of Pietro da Cortona (Cortona 1596-Rome 1669)
The Rape of the Sabines c. 1640-80
-
A drawing of a chaotic scene of figures around the steps of an edifice; with soldiers attacking women, left and right; in the centre, a commanding officer with adjutants directs the action from the top step. The drawing is in a semicircular format, suggesting that this may be a design for a fan.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 112: 'The Rape of the Sabines')
