Giovanni Paolo Schor (1615-1674)
A design for a cradle c. 1660-70
-
A design for a cradle supported by three winged putti; with a figure of Hercules sitting on a defeated dragon at one end, holding the apples of the Hesperides in one hand, and his club in the other. Minerva stands at the other end encouraging the viewer to join in her celebration. The whole group is placed on a low asymmetrical base.
This may be a design for a cradle to match the state bed designed by Schor for Princess Maria Mancini Colonna. See also RCIN 904457.Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c. 1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 112, as by Pietro da Cortona: 'Martial and Religious or Popish Devices mix'd, The first a Design for a Clock and Ornaments for insides of Churches, Pallaces, and other Devices')
