Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi (1606-1680)
A design for a ceiling
-
A design for a ceiling, showing a corner section, with a Cortonesque frame surrounding the central field. The cove is decorated illusionistically with a balustrade on which lean figures. The general disposition of the design recalls the frescoes of Andrea Pozzo in the Convento del S Cuore at the Trinita dei Monti, Rome.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c. 1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 112: 'Ornaments for insides of Churches, Pallaces, and other devices')
