A study for the arch between the nave and the crossing in the church of S Maria della Pace, Rome. The arms are those of Pope Julius II, who allowed the Chigi family to quarter those of della Rovere.
The arch is visible in the engraving in GB Falda's Il Nuovo teatro delle fabriche...di Roma moderna, 1665, i, Pl. 27. In the executed version the allegorical figures, which, according to Titti, are by Fancelli, have been slightly altered in pose and given clear attributes of Truth and Religion.Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c. 1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 112: Tom. II, 'Ornaments for insides of Churches, Pallaces, and other devices')
