Ciro Ferri (1634-89)
A study for a ceiling decoration c. 1671
-
A study for a ceiling decoration in Palazzo Borghese, Rome, executed in the early 1670s to Ferri's designs. In the decoration as executed, the central octago frames a Venus and Mars by Filippo Lauri, and the four side ovals house landscapes by Gaspard Dughet.
The drawing was formerly proposed to be a study for Pietro da Cortona's frescoes in Palazzo Pitti, Florence.Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c. 1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 112: Tom. II, 'Ornaments for insides of Churches, Pallaces, and other devices')
