Giovanni Paolo Schor (1615-1674)
A study for a decorative scheme for Alexander VII c.1660-67
-
This drawing, together with two others in the Royal Collection, must have been options for designs for the decoration of a salone for Pope Alexander VII. The designs are replete with the Chigi emblems of oak leaves, the six monti, and the eight-pointed star. In this sheet the arms of the pope are prominent beneath the arch on the right. See also RCIN 904443, 904445.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c. 1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 112, as by Pietro da Cortona: 'Martial and Religious or Popish Devices mix'd, The first a Design for a Clock and Ornaments for insides of Churches, Pallaces, and other Devices')
