Three studies of lions c. 1650
-
A sheet of three studies of lions. Catalogued in B(R) as autograph, but most probably a copy. The full-length study corresponds almost exactly with the lion in one corner of Cortona's ceiling fresco in the Salone of the Palazzo Barberini, Rome.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c. 1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 110: among works by 'Pietro de Petris, Masucci and other Scholars of Carlo Maratti, excepting one Caricatura by Ghezzi')
