A design for a frame for a portrait c. 1700
-
A design for a frame for a portrait: two putti hold a wreath at the top of a gadrooned oval frame, evidently intended for a portrait. Below, a bundle of brushes and a maulstick are placed above a cartouche which is marked as if with an inscription. This is probably a preparatory drawing for an engraving.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 110: among 33 'Drawings of Pietro de Petris. Massuci and other Scholars of Carlo Maratti, excepting one Caricatura by Ghezzi')
