Angels around a sarcophagus playing musical instruments c. 1650-80
-
A drawing of angels playing musical instruments around a sarcophagus. With putti and heads of putti in the background. The composition is enclosed in a quatrefoil. It has been minutely pricked around the outlines.
A drawing of the same composition, in the same shaped panel, is in the Albertina where it is wrongly ascribed to Passeri. Another drawing at Düsseldorf showing a saint in glory, has exactly the same complex quatrefoil shape for the main panel and is a study by Odazzi for the ceiling fresco of S Andrea al Quirinale. It is possible, therefore, that RCIN 904420 may be connected with the decoration of the same church.Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p.110: among 33 'Drawings of Pietro de Petris. Massuci and other Scholars of Carlo Maratti, excepting one Caricatura by Ghezzi')
