Attributed to Pietro de' Pietri (1663-1716)
A saint receiving two laymen
-
A drawing of a saint standing outside a gate, perhaps of his monastery. He addresses two men on the left, and he appears to be defying them. Amongst other figures, a woman sits with her child in the foreground with her open hand extended.
RCIN 904414, 904415 and 904417 come from a volume containing drawings by Pietro de Pietri, Masucci, and other followers of Carlo Maratta. The figure types recall those in the painting of the Cessation of the Schism of Anacletus at Dijon (see RCIN 905661).Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p.110: among 33 'Drawings of Pietro de Petris. Massuci and other Scholars of Carlo Maratti, excepting one Caricatura by Ghezzi')
