Pietro de' Pietri (1663-1716)
A study for the Presentation of Christ in the Temple c. 1705
-
A drawing of the Virgin delivering the Child into the arms of the High Priest. This drawing, and RCIN 970007, form the third pair of five ovals in the two aisles of the church of S Maria in Via Lata, Roma. The orientation of the main figures in the drawings differ from that in the two canvases, but apart from this the correspondences are extremely close. A larger rectangular version of this composition, known to have been in a private collection, is inscribed on one side Pietro de Pietri, and on the other, Maratta.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p.110: among 33 'Drawings of Pietro de Petris. Massuci and other Scholars of Carlo Maratti, excepting one Caricatura by Ghezzi')
