Carlo Maratti (1625-1713)
The sacrifice of a bull
-
A drawing of two kneeling men, one holding a bull by its horns whilst another appears to be in the process of slitting its throat. A man behind them is flanked by two statues. A putto holding up one side of a medallion stands on the right. This is a copy after the bas-relief entitled The Sacrifice of a Bull, formerly in the Villa Medici, now in the Uffizi. The Royal Collection has eighteen drawings by Maratti and his studio, after antique sculpture (B(R) 373-392). Some of these are engraved in Jan de Bisschop's Signorum Veterum Icones, c.1672-89.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 109: 'Study's from Antique Basso Relievo's')
