Giovanni Lanfranco (1582-1647)
The Assumption c.1630-31
-
A drawing of the Virgin ascending to heaven supported by putti and billowing clouds. This is a study for the upper part of the composition, painted for the Fugger family in 1631, now in the Museum at Augsburg. Although the drawing differs in many ways from the painting, it is probably a first preperation for it. Formerly placed within the the Maratta volumes.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 109: 'Assumption of the V :M:')
