Francesco Allegrini (c. 1624-c. 1680)
A warrior abducting a woman c.1650-75
-
A drawing of an antique warrior carrying off a woman; two further horseman to the left, apparently fighting; a crouching figure lower right. The principal motif is found adapted in a composition of the Rape of the Sabine Women by Allegrini, known in versions in Karlsruhe (according to Blunt (Misc), reporting information given by Dr Herwarth Röttgen) and on the art market.
The drawing came from the Maratti sequence. The heavily cut inscription at lower left appears to be the same as that on 905219, del Cavallier Gioseppe, and the drawing was thus attributed by Popham (in P&W) to Giuseppe Cesari, the Cavaliere d'Arpino, Allegrini's master.Provenance
From the Maratti sequence; Royal Collection by c.1810
