David with the head of Goliath c.1625-35
Black and red chalk on discoloured white paper | 25.7 x 21.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 904346

Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680)
David with the head of Goliath c.1625-35
-
A portrait of a young man in the guise of David, with the head of Goliath gripped by the hair and held in his arms. The sheet has been damaged and patched on the right. The sitter bears a strong resemblance to the boy depicted in RCIN 905543. The presence of this drawing in the Maratta volumes may be explained by the fact that he owned it.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 109: 'David with the Head of Goliah')
