Andrea Sacchi (1599-1661)
A design for a title-page, with the arms of Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi
-
A drawing of a free-standing monument at the top of which sits a figure of Religion, holding the cross and the tiara, adored by three worshippers. Below figures, presumably of unbelievers or heretics, flee in terror. In the centre, two putti support the arms of the Cardinal. Below this is a space for an Inscription, and at the bottom of the design are two putti with anchors. There is an illegible inscription, between the putti, probably approving the design for engraving. This is probably a design for a title page. From the Maratta volumes.
Provenance
Probably Carlo Maratta, and thus purchased by Pope Clement XI, 1703; by whom bequeathed to his nephew Alessandro Albani, 1721; from whom purchased by George III, 1762; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 109: 'Faith Triumphant on a piece of Architecture')
