A study of a herm c.1650-55
-
A study for a figure of a herm. The suggested attributions of this great life study have run the gamut from Rubens to Bernini to Pietro da Cortona (reported in Blunt (Misc)) to Annibale Carracci, as a study for the ceiling of the Galleria Farnese (J. Byam Shaw, recorded in B(M); Wittkower did not agree). Susan Bandes (note on file) and Ann Sutherland Harris (letter, 1994) however attributed the drawing to Guglielmo Cortese (Guillaume Courtois), as a study for the decoration of the frieze in the Sala dei Paesi in Palazzo Pamphilj, Piazza Navona, Rome, c.1651-54, where Courtois's grisailles frame landscapes by Gaspard Dughet.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 106: probably one of six studies listed as by Maratti under 'Accademie di Diversi Autori')
