Carlo Maratti (1625-1713)
The Madonna and Child
-
A drawing after Raphael's painting of the Holy Family, in the Louvre. Christ stands on a cradle as he reaches across the Virgin's lap towards St Anne, who kneels on the left. This unfinished drawing compresses the original composition by leaving out the figure of the infant Baptist.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 109: Tom. IV, 'Contains Forty two Drawings in Red Chalk, after the Paintings of Raphael in the Vatican at Rome')
