Carlo Maratti (1625-1713)
The Flight into Egypt c.1655-75
-
A sheet of drawings including the head and shoulders of a bearded man in profile, the lower legs of a draped figure, and several floral ornament studies incorporating an animal's head. The bearded head is almost identical with that of St Joseph, though it is of a type which frequently occurs in Maratti's work. This is probably a studio drawing after the painting of the Flight into Egypt, formerly in Siena Cathedral, now in the Chigi Collection, Siena.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 108: 'Of Heads, Madonnas')
