An offset from a drawing after Jusepe de Ribera's painting of the Virgin lamenting the Dead Christ in the Certosa di S Martino, Naples. Christ's body, supported by St John, occupies the foreground of the compostion; Mary Magdalen kisses His feet, while the Virgin kneels at His side, and Joseph stands on the left.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 107: 'A Calk of a Drawing of a Pietà')
