Red chalk on buff paper | 24.1 x 18.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 904151

Carlo Maratti (1625-1713)
A study for the Virgin and St Luke
-
A drawing of St Luke, kneeling before his easel as he paints a portrait of the Virgin who stands close by, with the Child in her arms. This is a study for St Luke painting the Virgin, in a private collection in Germany. St Luke is in almost exactly the same pose, but the painting features St Anthony of Padua. A highly finished drawing in the Bloxham Collection, Rugby School, is a variant of this drawing.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 107: 'St. Luke painting the V : Mary's pictures')
