Carlo Maratti (1625-1713)
St Philip Neri adoring a painting of the Virgin shown to him by an angel
-
A drawing in oval format of St Philip Neri kneeling before a painting of the Virgin, being shown to him by a gesturing angel. A similar drawing, in reverse, was with Charles E Slatkin, New York, in 1966, and appears to be the original of which RCIN 904149 is a reversed copy. The former is a composition study for the painting of St Philip Neri adoring a painting of the Virgin shown to him by an Angel, in the Palazzo Rospigliosi, Rome. It was engraved by Jacob Frey.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 107: 'St. Filippo Neri')
