Carlo Maratti (1625-1713)
Tobias leaving his family
-
A drawing of Tobias being led to the right by the angel, as he takes leave of his family seated near a tree on the left. The figure of the angel is related to a painting of which two versions are known, one at Chatsworth, as Pietro da Cortona, the other in the Durlacher sale (Christie's, 8.vii.1938, lot 85), as Maratti. This composition was engraved by Bartolozzi in 'Prints....from the original pictures and drawings...in the Collection of His Majesty', ii, Pl.7.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 107: 'The Angel with Tobias, & the Spouse with her Attendants')
