Carlo Maratti (1625-1713)
A composition study for La Tintura della Rosa
-
A drawing of Venus seated amidst foliage as a putto extracts a thorn from her foot; this is a study for La Tintura della Rosa in the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen. See also RCIN 904173, 904227. These drawings probably represent ideas produced in connection with the painting, and then rejected by the artist. A drawing showing a different version of this theme is in the Witt Collection at the Courtauld Institute. RCIN 904100 was engraved by Ryland in 1763 for Rogers, A collection of prints in imitation of drawings, 1778, i, p. 165.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 107)
