Red chalk and red wash | 20.2 x 28.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 904095
-
A drawing of Tobias standing with the Angel Raphael at his side, as he bids farewell to his parents who stand near the doorway. Tobias points towards a young woman who is glancing back at him as she steps back through the door. From the Maratta volumes, but certainly by Sacchi. An almost identical drawing, of poorer quality, is in the Gabinetto Nazionale, Rome (124785) described as 'intorno al Camassei'.
Provenance
Probably Carlo Maratta, and thus purchased by Pope Clement XI, 1703; by whom bequeathed to his nephew Alessandro Albani, 1721; from whom purchased by George III, 1762 ; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c. 1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 107: 'Tobias with the Angel & family')
