Hagar and Ishmael
Red chalk | 38.4 x 47.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 904093

Carlo Maratti (1625-1713)
Hagar and Ishmael
-
A drawing of Hagar striding to the left as she is confronted by the Angel of the Lord. Ishmael reclines under a tree on the right. This is a composition study for the painting of Hagar and Ishmael, formerly in the Duke of Westminster's Collection. Both this study and RCIN 904353 differ substantially from the painting, and must either be preliminary versions or later variants. The figures in this study are related to Francesco Cozza's version of the same subject.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 107: 'Hagar & Ishmael')
