A drawing of several figures reacting dramatically as two men in the foreground lift a tripod from a hole in the ground. On the right an old man, leaning on a boy, points out of the picture. In the background is a town, with a castle and a pyramid. The subject has been interpreted as The finding of the cup in Benjamin’s sack, but the central figures are clearly unearthing (or burying) a large tripod. Castiglione has assimilated the almost geometrical clarity of Poussin’s compositions, and does not overload the foreground with too many figures; their gestures and expressions are varied and appropriate, with a hint of Raphael’s seminal tapestry designs of a century before.

Probably Carlo II and Fernandino-Carlo Gonzaga, 9th and 10th Dukes of Mantua; Zaccaria Sagredo; from whose heirs purchased by Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice, 1752; from whom purchased by George III, 1762
