Europa and the Bull c. 1664
-
A drawing of the companions of Europa sitting at leisure beneath trees; Europa, in the centre, is mounted astride the bull which, in this representation, seems disinclined to run away with her to Crete. This is a preparatory drawing for a fresco in the Palazzo Giustiniani Baggio, Vicenza.
Two further drawings by Ghisolfi are preparatory to this mythological fresco: RCIN 903734 and RCIN 903735.Provenance
Probably acquired by George III from the collection of Consul Joseph Smith, c.1762; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-20 (Inv.A. p.20: one of '5 of Millanese')
