Italian School, 16th century
The Resurrection c.1550-1650

A study for an arched altarpiece. Popham classed the drawing as 'Uncertain school', while noting '[Frederick] Antal suggested Andrea Lilio as the draughtsman but about which, in the absence of comparative material in the way of other drawings, it is impossible to feel certain. It also shows some resemblance in style to Francesco Vanni, though it is not by him.' Antal later suggested an alternative attribution to Ferrau Fenzoni, in his review of P&W (Burlington Magazine, 1951, p. 35). The extravagant forms may suggest a Bolognese draughtsman of the seventeenth century, though the watermark appears to be Roman, early seventeenth century.
