A drawing of a battle scene, a horseman to the left spearing a fallen foe below; with another horseman, summarily indicated, about to throw his spear; with sketchy forms to the right. Oval composition. This is a study for Cignani's fresco in San Michele in Bosco, Bologna, documented to 1665. Inscribed on the verso: del Sig. Cav[...] Cignani.

Probably purchased by Richard Dalton on behalf of George III c.1760; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv.A, p.20: among 49 drawings 'Mostly of Canuti, about a fifth part of Franchesino. at the end of the Volume two or three of Gio: Giuseppe del Sole, and some Scholars of Carlo Cignani')
