Giuseppe Rolli (1645-1727)
The Apotheosis of St Gaetano c. 1690
-
A drawing of the apotheosis of St Gaetano, seen from a low viewpoint: amidst clouds the saint is flanked by two female figures; above, the figure of Faith on the left, with Charity and Hope on the right; to the left a figure armed with sword and shield slays a dragon. A composition study for the fresco by Giuseppe and Antonio Rolli in the cupola of the church of St Bartolomeo and St Gaetano, Bologna. Inscribed on the mount, lower left: Del Canuti.
An earlier sketch for the same fresco is in the Graphische Sammlung at Munich (inv. no. 8318, attributed to Antonio Rossi, perhaps a misreading of Antonio Rolli).Provenance
Probably purchased by Richard Dalton on behalf of George III c.1760; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p.20: among 49 drawings 'Mostly of Canuti...')
