A flying figure with sword and shield c.1677-80
-
A drawing of a flying warrior figure with helmet and shield, and a raised sword in his right hand; with a sketch of a reclining figure below. The pose, though not the attributes, corresponds closely to the figure of Virtuous Love (chasing out the Vices) in Canuti's fresco in the library of San Michele in Bosco, Bologna (cf. RCIN 990354). On the verso, visible against the light, a pen sketch of a magus kneeling before the Madonna and Child. An inscription on the verso seems to read 'Del Caleza'(?). The style of this sketch is close to Ludovico Carracci.
Provenance
Probably purchased by Richard Dalton on behalf of George III c.1760; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p.20: among 49 drawings 'Mostly of Canuti...')
