Donato Creti (1671-1749)
The Adoration of the Shepherds
-
A drawing of the Virgin seated with the Child in her arms, amidst classical ruins; with shepherds kneeling on the left, and a female figure by a column on the right.
When seen against the light, a sketch of the Flagellation of Christ becomes visible on the back, along with a note: Crespi. In spite of the inscription the drawing is a typical work of Donato Creti. A Flagellation of Christ by Creti is mentioned in the literature as being in the Church of S. Stefano at Bologna, but it is no longer there.Provenance
Probably acquired by George III from the collection of Consul Joseph Smith c.1762; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-20 (Inv.A. p.20: among 'Bolognesi Moderni')
