Temperance c.1700
-
A drawing of a seated woman, apparently in a state of heightened emotion, with two vases by her feet. This is an allegorical figure of Temperance, a pendant to Prudence, RCIN 903595; Fortitude and Justice are at Christ Church, Oxford.
The attribution of six drawings in the Royal Collection (RCIN 903590-903595) to Giovanni Antonio Burrini is traditional. They all come from the first volume of the 'Bolognesi Moderni' drawings acquired by George III, which contained drawings by Burrini according to the early nineteenth-century Inventory A (p. 20). In addition to this there are fairly old notes Del Burrini on the mounts of these drawings.Provenance
Probably purchased by Richard Dalton on behalf of George III c.1760; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inventory A, p. 20, Tom.I: among 'Bolognesi Moderni' as by Burrini)
