The Adoration of the Shepherds c. 1600-30
-
A drawing representing the Adoration of the Shepherds in which the Holy Family is grouped in the centre, between the bases of two massive columns. The shepherds are gathered on the left in a descending line, with a kneeling figure in the foreground.
This drawing is from a volume described in George lll's Inventory A as 'Bolognesi Moderni', but probably is by a late representative of the tradition of Veronese, working in the first half of the seventeenth century.
Provenance
Probably acquired in 1762 by George III from the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c. 1800-20 (Inv.A, p.20, as among 'Bolognesi Moderni')
