Follower of Pietro Faccini (c. 1562-1602)
St Francis receiving the Christ Child c.1600-25
-
St Francis kneeling to left, cradling in his arms the infant Christ; the Madonna on clouds to right, an angel upper left. Popham (in P&W) catalogued the drawing as Anonymous Bolognese, c.1600, while noting Faccini's etching of the subject (Bartsch XVIII, p.272, no. 1). The figural types are too regular for Faccini, but the wash style comes close to him, and it is probably a work by an artist in his wake.
Provenance
From an album listed in George III's Inventory A, c.1800, p. 20, 'Bolognesi Moderni. Tom. I', not specified.
