Saint Jerome in the Wilderness
-
A drawing of Saint Jerome in the Wilderness, executed in pen, ink and wash on blue paper, heightened with white and squared in red chalk.
Popham and Wilde attributed the sheet to an artist in the circle of Palma Giovane (1548-1628), suggesting it could be the work of Johann Rottenhammer (1564 - 1625). Rottenhammer was born and trained in Munich, before travelling to Italy in 1588. Between 1595/6 and 1606, Rottenhammer was active in Venice, where he was influenced by the work of Palma Giovane, an influence reflected strongly in his drawings. -
