Guido Reni (Bologna 1575-Bologna 1642)
A sibyl c. 1640
-
A schematic drawing of an old woman, seated to front, heavily draped. The pose of the figure corresponds with a chiaroscuro woodcut by Reni's collaborator Bartolomeo Coriolano (Bartsch XII, p. 87, no. 2; RCIN 807635), though the details of the drapery were altered, and appears to be Reni's model drawing for Coriolano.
For others of this nature see RCIN 903379-86, and H. McBurney & N. Turner, 'Drawings by Guido Reni for Woodcuts by Bartolomeo Coriolano', Print Quarterly, 1988, pp. 226-42. Another, possibly related, drawing of a Sibyl by Reni was most recently at Sothebys NY, Old Master Drawings, Jan 2021, lot 48.Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20: p. 81, ‘Guido &c. Tom. 6’, ‘A Study for a Prophetess or Sybil’.
