Guido Reni (Bologna 1575-Bologna 1642)
A drapery study c.1600-1640
-
A study for the drapery of a woman, her right arm leaning on a pedestal, her left hand to her breast. Another study for the same figure is at RCIN 903360.
The pose of the woman corresponds closely to the figure in the composition study RCIN 902291, perhaps Alexander and Roxana, and these two detailed drapery studies strongly suggest that Reni did execute a painting of the composition, which does not survive.Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20: p. 80, ‘Guido &c. Tom. 4’, among ’18 Studies for Draperies’.
