Guido Reni (Bologna 1575-Bologna 1642)
Saint Ethelreda c.1610-12
-
A drawing of a standing, heavily draped woman, looking down to the right; at lower left, a slight sketch for her head.
The drawing is a study for Reni's fresco of three female saints, one of the scenes on the underside of the arches above the lunettes in the Cappella Paolina, in Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome. Reni's frescoes were executed in 1610-12, as part of a decorative scheme coordinated by the Cavaliere d'Arpino. In the fresco as executed the draperies are very close to those drawn here, but saint looks up to heaven. For other drawings for the scheme see RCIN 903408-9.
An earlier study for the figure group, showing five saints rather than three as executed, is in the Uffizi (inv. 12461-F).
