After Guido Reni (Bologna 1575-Bologna 1642)
The Christ Child c.1625-1700
-
A drawing of the Christ Child, standing against the lap of the Madonna, his arm across his body. The drawing corresponds with the Christ Child in Reni's Virgin and Child Enthroned with Saints, in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden. Kurz (in K(B)) considered it an original study, but all later scholars have acknowledged that it is a copy, probably from the painting rather than from an original drawing by Reni. See S. Pepper, Guido Reni, 1984, under no. 79.
Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20: p. 80, ‘Guido &c. Tom. 5’, the latter of ‘2. a sleeping Boy in red Chalk, and another standing.’
