After Guido Reni (Bologna 1575-Bologna 1642)
Andromeda c.1635-1700
-
A drawing of Andromeda, naked, chained to a rock. The figure corresponds with the figure in Reni's painting of Perseus and Andromeda, of c.1635-6, known in two versions. The first, anciently in the Devonshire Collection, is probably the original; a second version in the Galleria Pallavicini, Rome, was listed in an inventory of 1679 as the work of Giovanni Andrea Sirani, Reni's pupil. See S. Pepper, Guido Reni, 1984, under no. 158.
The drawing was made on the reverse of a sheet of letterpress, which is showing through the paper (as with RCIN 903458). Though it was catalogued by Kurz (in K(B)) as 'a first sketch for the figure of Andromeda', the drawing is not in Reni's hand and has every appearance of being a copy after the painting. B. Bohn (note on mount, 2008) suggested the drawing might be the work of Sirani.Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20: p. 80, ‘Guido &c. Tom. 5’, as '1 study of Andromeda. fine'.
