Attributed to Guido Reni (Bologna 1575-Bologna 1642)
A sheet of studies c.1600-20
-
A drawing of the bust of a woman in left profile, the head of a child looking to the right, and a leg in left profile.
The drawing comes from the Reni sequence but was not catalogued as such by Wittkower. An attribution to Donato Creti by Philip Pouncey was recorded in B(M), but Nicholas Turner suggested an attribution to Agostino Carracci or Reni (note on mount, 1988). Reni was preferred by Ann Sutherland Harris (note on mount), Agostino by Babette Bohn (note on mount, 2008). The traditional attribution to Reni certainly seems preferable.Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20: p. 80, ‘Guido &c. Tom. 5’, 'Two heads & a leg drawing with a pen'
