Attributed to Guido Reni (Bologna 1575-Bologna 1642)
The Virgin and Child with St John the Baptist and St Francis c.1600-40
-
A sketch of the Virgin and Child, seated on clouds, with Sts John the Baptist and Francis kneeling below.
The drawing comes from the Reni sequence and was attributed to Reni by Bodmer (note on mount). It was classed by Kurz (in K(B)) as simply Anonymous Bolognese, but the indications of the figures are confident and clearly in Reni's style, and an attribution to Reni himself is probable.Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20: p. 80, ‘Guido &c. Tom. 5’, 'V.M. & 2 Saints, a slight sketch.'
