Circle of Guido Reni (Bologna 1575-Bologna 1642)
Christ 1600-50
-
Christ, bust length, profile left, his left hand raised in blessing; in an oval.
RCINs 903432-46 are fifteen small drawings that correspond with a set of fifteen etchings of the heads of Christ, the Virgin and thirteen disciples, catalogued by Adam Bartsch (Le Peintre-graveur, XVIII, p. 319, nos. 9-23) as by an anonymous printmaker after Guido Reni. The drawings are in pen and ink over rough black chalk, though 903440 has red chalk in the framing line and a letter ‘G.’ (presumably for Guido) inscribed below. The drawings are in the reverse sense to the prints, and they are roughly the same size as the prints, though there is no consistent relationship of size. All the prints feature a double oval framing line; most of the drawings are in a single oval, though two (903435 and 903440) are in rectangular frames (903435 also features a lightly sketched oval), and those two drawings do not have the background shading that in all other cases corresponds between drawing and print. It does seem inherently likely that the drawings served as the models for the prints.
The drawings bear a traditional attribution to Guido Reni, and though they do not seem to be in his hand, an attribution to Guido himself should be reconsidered. They are at least by an artist of his circle; Bodmer suggested Francesco Brizio (note on mount).
Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20: p. 80, ‘Guido &c. Tom. 5’, ‘15 drawings with a pen, of Christ, the V.M. & Apostles.’
