The Rest on the Flight into Egypt
-
A drawing of the Holy Family seated in a landscape, with the Child asleep in the Virgin's arms; a donkey to the left with its head lowered. This is a study in reverse for Cantarini's etching, Bartsch 4.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III, c.1760; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A. p. 80: among '18 Drawings of Madonnas, most of them by Guido, etched by his Scholars. These were in the Bionfigliuola collection' - but the provenance of all of these to the Bonfiglioli collection must be questioned)
