Circle of Guido Reni (Bologna 1575-Bologna 1642)
The Virgin and Child c.1630-50
-
A drawing of the Virgin and Child seated on clouds, the Child blessing, the Virgin holding a rosary, two child angels holding a crown over the head of the Virgin. The drawing is a variant of the group in Guido Reni's Virgin and Child with Saints (the Pala della Peste) of 1630-31, now in the Pinacoteca, Bologna, and by a good associate of Reni, quite possibly Simone Cantarini. Kurz (in K(B)) noted 'A similar drawing was formerly at Nebehay's (repr. in the catalogue, Die Zeichnung, Heft IV, pl. 148).'
Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20: p. 80, ‘Guido &c. Tom. 5’, among ‘18 Drawings of Madonnas, most of them by Guido; etched by his scholars, these were in the Buonfigliuola collection’ (RCIN 903411-28). The Bonfiglioli inventory of 1696 does list 'Un Dissegno con la Mad.na e Putto di mano di Guido', but a provenance of 903418 from the Bonfiglioli collection is demonstrably wrong, and it is highly unlikely that all the others in this group came from that collection.
