Attributed to Simone Cantarini (Pesaro 1612-Verona 1648)
The Rest on the Flight into Egypt
-
A drawing of the Madonna and Child seated in the foreground; a landscape beyond, with vague indications of Joseph and a donkey in the right distance. Oval composition, trimmed at the sides. H. Bodmer proposed Simone Cantarini, but B. Bohn (2005) suggested that the style is close to Sisto Badalocchio.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III, c.1760; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-20 (Inv. A, p. 80: among '18 Drawings of Madonnas, most of them by Guido, etched by his Scholars. These were in the Bionfigliuola collection' - but the provenance of all of these to the Bonfiglioli collection must be questioned)
