Attributed to Guido Reni (Bologna 1575-Bologna 1642)
St Stephen and the Rabbis c.1595-1600
-
A study of two figures disputing, the younger figure to the left seated, an older man, heavily draped, standing to the right, other bearded figures seated around; in a lunette, squared for transfer.
The traditional attribution was to Guido Reni, as Christ among the Doctors. Kurz (in K(B)) catalogued the drawing simply as 'anonymous Bolognese'. C. Johnston (The Drawings of Guido Reni, PhD thesis, Courtauld 1974, no. 15) however pointed to a companion study by Reni in the Uffizi, 12463-F, for a lunette of the consecration of a deacon, and so identified the subject of the present sheet as the rare St Stephen among the Rabbis. The drawing must be an early work, when Reni was still in the orbit of Ludovico Carracci.
Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20: p. 80, ‘Guido &c. Tom. 5’, 'Christ disputing amongst the Doctors'.
